This whole idea that someone can’t start a sentence without saying “the whole idea” is wholly amazing. The whole idea just baffles me.

The French philosopher Pascal argued that free will exists, but only in countries with one “r” in the name: France, the United States of America, Russia. Of course, this leads to Pascal’s famous paradox: you have free will if you live in Britain, but not in England or in the United Kingdom. On his deathbed Pascal issued his famous wager: he bet no one would remember this argument until the year 2012. Well, he was almost right.

I have struggled to understand the argument that free will doesn’t exists. It sure seems to me that I have free will, but perhaps it is illusion. For example, didn’t I decide not to watch the Super Bowl or was that because I don’t have a TV.

I always thought the prequels were an abomination, but it was hard to pinpoint why? Thanks for the post.

It is true as CW Johnson writes that sometimes we must suspend our disbelief when watching a movie, e.g. we all know time travel is not possible, but we should at least expect a plot with some excitement, not just special effects.

We should start a letter writing campaign to have Lucas recall the movies like Ralph Nader forced GM to recall the Corvair. Perhaps, if thousands of people wrote Lucas and demanded that the Prequels be stricken from the record we could start fresh. In the meantime, I’m going to pretend they don’t exist.

Of course, when one starts thinking about it, the plots of many cultural touchstones make no sense. Most of the Star Trek movies make very little sense. And to say the plots of most operas and American musicals are silly is an understatement.

But I agree, the Star Wars canon got more and more nonsensical. And yet I know people who loved them–not just the original trilogy, but even the prequel trilogy.
